Cassini's apparent path of Mercury

Diagram of Mercury's geocentric path, 1708–1715, presented to the Académie royale des sciences

A plot of Mercury's path as seen from a fixed Earth over 1708–1715, showing the repeated loops of its retrogradations with the Sun's apparent annual path dotted through the middle. It is known from a reduced copy in Ledger's book of 1882, which says J. D. Cassini presented the drawing to the French Academy of Sciences on 7 August 1709; Ledger also reproduces a Cassini diagram of the apparent paths of Jupiter and Saturn.
