Eclipses 2027

Five eclipses fall in 2027, in two eclipse seasons: annular solar eclipse on 6 Feb, penumbral lunar eclipse on 20 Feb, penumbral lunar eclipse on 18 Jul, total solar eclipse on 2 Aug and penumbral lunar eclipse on 17 Aug. Mercury is retrograde at the penumbral lunar eclipse on 20 Feb.

Each wedge spans 18.5° either side of the lunar node the Sun passes in that season, drawn at the node’s place mid-season: the nodes slide back about 19° a year. Solar eclipses sit on the outer ring at the Sun’s longitude, lunar ones on the inner ring at the Moon’s.

Questions

01When are the eclipses in 2027?
Annular solar: 6 Feb 2027, 17° Aquarius; Penumbral lunar: 20 Feb 2027, 1° Virgo; Penumbral lunar: 18 Jul 2027, 25° Capricorn; Total solar: 2 Aug 2027, 9° Leo; Penumbral lunar: 17 Aug 2027, 24° Aquarius. Times of greatest eclipse are on this page, in UTC.
02When is eclipse season in 2027?
22 Jan 2027 to 27 Feb 2027 (north node); 16 Jul 2027 to 22 Aug 2027 (south node). A season here is every UTC day on which the Sun stands within 18.5° of one of the Moon’s nodes.
03Which planets are retrograde during the 2027 eclipses?
Annular solar eclipse on 6 Feb: Retrograde that day: Mars, Jupiter and Uranus. Penumbral lunar eclipse on 20 Feb: Retrograde that day: Mercury, Mars and Jupiter. It falls on day 12 of a 23-day Mercury retrograde. Penumbral lunar eclipse on 18 Jul: Retrograde that day: Neptune and Pluto. Total solar eclipse on 2 Aug: Retrograde that day: Neptune and Pluto. Penumbral lunar eclipse on 17 Aug: Retrograde that day: Saturn, Neptune and Pluto.
04What is an eclipse season?
The Moon’s orbit is tilted about five degrees to the Sun’s path, so most new and full moons pass above or below the Sun or Earth’s shadow. Twice a year, for about five weeks, the Sun stands near one of the two points where the orbits cross, the nodes; any new or full moon then is close enough to the node to cast or catch a shadow. Every season has at least two eclipses, a solar and a lunar, and sometimes three.
