Eclipses 2035

Four eclipses fall in 2035, in two eclipse seasons: penumbral lunar eclipse on 22 Feb, annular solar eclipse on 9 Mar, partial lunar eclipse on 19 Aug and total solar eclipse on 2 Sep. Mercury is direct at every one of them.

Each wedge spans 18.5° either side of the lunar node the Sun passes in that season, drawn at the node’s place mid-season: the nodes slide back about 19° a year. Solar eclipses sit on the outer ring at the Sun’s longitude, lunar ones on the inner ring at the Moon’s.

The seasons of 2035

SEASON I · SOUTH NODE

15 Feb – 23 Mar 2035

37 days on which the Sun stands within 18.5° of the Moon’s south node, at 14° Pisces mid-season. Retrograde during it: Saturn (the whole season) and Uranus (28 days).

  • Penumbral lunar3° Virgo · Penumbral only: the Moon dims without entering the umbra, for 256 minutes.Retrograde that day: Saturn and Uranus.NASA map

SEASON II · NORTH NODE

10 Aug – 16 Sep 2035

38 days on which the Sun stands within 18.5° of the Moon’s north node, at 5° Virgo mid-season. Retrograde during it: Mercury (4 days), Mars (33 days), Jupiter (8 days), Neptune (the whole season) and Pluto (the whole season).

Eclipses and times of greatest eclipse are computed with astronomy-engine and checked against NASA’s eclipse catalog; see the method.

Questions

01When are the eclipses in 2035?
Penumbral lunar: 22 Feb 2035, 3° Virgo; Annular solar: 9 Mar 2035, 19° Pisces; Partial lunar: 19 Aug 2035, 26° Aquarius; Total solar: 2 Sep 2035, 9° Virgo. Times of greatest eclipse are on this page, in UTC.
02When is eclipse season in 2035?
15 Feb 2035 to 23 Mar 2035 (south node); 10 Aug 2035 to 16 Sep 2035 (north node). A season here is every UTC day on which the Sun stands within 18.5° of one of the Moon’s nodes.
03Which planets are retrograde during the 2035 eclipses?
Penumbral lunar eclipse on 22 Feb: Retrograde that day: Saturn and Uranus. Annular solar eclipse on 9 Mar: Retrograde that day: Saturn and Uranus. Partial lunar eclipse on 19 Aug: Retrograde that day: Mars, Neptune and Pluto. Total solar eclipse on 2 Sep: Retrograde that day: Mars, Neptune and Pluto.
04What is an eclipse season?
The Moon’s orbit is tilted about five degrees to the Sun’s path, so most new and full moons pass above or below the Sun or Earth’s shadow. Twice a year, for about five weeks, the Sun stands near one of the two points where the orbits cross, the nodes; any new or full moon then is close enough to the node to cast or catch a shadow. Every season has at least two eclipses, a solar and a lunar, and sometimes three.
